One of the real stars that you will meet if you visit Center for Pain Management is Mrs. Rosabel Gonzalez, Center for Pain Management’s Physician’s assistant. Mrs. Gonzalez has been working with the staff at CFPM since 2011. “Our patients are very close to her, She is the embodiment of our philosophy to work together to manage the pain that our patients face”, said Mike Habig CEO of CFPM.

Mrs. Gonzalez is bilingual and grew up in San Antonio. She was drawn to Center for Pain Management by the chance to make a real difference in the lives of a large number of people. Doctor Chowdhury heads the treatment team but his right hand is Mrs. Gonzalez.

Mrs. Gonzalez completed her Physician’s Assistant studies at UTPA in Edinburg, Texas in 2007. She continued her studies and earned a Master’s Degree before beginning practice. The experience she has gained while working at CFPM enables her to understand the many different aspects of chronic pain.

More than the physical effects, the psychological impact of continuous pain can disable you and make it difficult to work or even function throughout the day. Pain management when attacked the way it is at Center for Pain Management can help restore a patient’s lifestyle. The psychological impact on a patient who has been living in pain for a long time and suddenly doesn’t have to deal with the agony anymore is astonishing.

Mrs. Gonzalez when asked why she chose to come to Center for pain Management said, “I really liked the sense of family that we have between the staff and patients. That kind of psychological support can make such a difference in how well a patient responds to our pain treatment plans of care.

Center for Pain Management has a strong reputation among medical professionals in the Rio Grande Valley. It is known for outstanding standards of patient care and up to date treatment protocols. The varied and cutting edge techniques used at CFPM along with the dedicated staff and caring attitude have differentiated it from other clinics.

The slogan for CFPM is “Live Well Now”. Mrs. Gonzalez has made it her life’s work to help patients do just that.

Botox: It’s Not Just Cosmetic

July 28, 2015 by admin

When we hear the word Botox, we immediately think “wrinkle eraser.” What began as a treatment for twitching eye muscles has become one of the most widely used non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the world. Although Botox became an overnight sensation as the “new fountain of youth,” it continues to be very effective for the same conditions it was first approved to treat.

Botox was first licensed by the FDA in 1989 for the treatment of Benign Essential Blepharospasm, a condition that causes involuntary muscle spasms around the eye and other symptoms like ocular pain, dry or watery eyes, and increased blinking. Although most people will suffer from stress-related eye twitching at some point in their lives, BEB sufferers seek treatment because they find that it interferes with their daily activities. Most are surprised to find that their doctor will recommend Botox to relieve their symptoms. “Once it is recommended, the patient is told that Botox will be used as the medication that will paralyze the muscles and stop the unwanted contractions,” explains Araceli Gaona, Clinic Supervisor at The Center for Pain Management. “Their initial reaction is, ‘I thought that was only cosmetic!’ ”

The Center for Pain Management uses Botox to treat many of their patients that come in with painful and debilitating conditions. “We can use Botox for spasticity, cervical dystonia – a neurological condition that is caused by muscle contractions that twist the muscles -, chronic migraines, blepharospasm, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy,” explains Gaona. “In our office, we use it mostly for cases of severe spasticity and chronic headaches.”

Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum that paralyzes a specific muscle or groups of muscles by blocking chemical changes on nerve endings. “For chronic headaches, it is injected into muscles of the forehead, the side and back of the head, and the neck and shoulders, to produce a partial temporary chemical ‘denervation’ of the muscle,” explains Araceli Gaona. “This causes the muscles to become too weak to be able to contract.” Because Botox is injected directly into the muscle group, there is very little absorption of this toxin in the bloodstream. The effects of the injection last anywhere from 6-9 months and then it needs to be reapplied.

The Center for Pain Management has been providing innovative pain management treatments like this one for over 20 years. After completing an M.B.B.S. from Rajshahi Medical College in Bangladesh and receiving additional training in anesthesiology and pain management from Boston University and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Tajul Chowdhury established this interdisciplinary pain management facility in the Rio Grande Valley. The clinic quickly became one of the leading treatment centers for nerve pain, arthritis, cancer-related pain, migraines, shingles, herniated discs, injuries, and many other types of pain. Although CFPM is located in Edinburg, Texas, patients travel from all over the state to find relief for their conditions.

Dr. Chowdhury’s mission of bringing new options to replace more traditional and invasive treatments is being fulfilled in this area. From Botox and Kyphoplasty to Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD), The Center for Pain Management is proud to help patients manage their pain using the least invasive and safest procedures available in the industry. Pair that with excellent and compassionate care and you’ll find out why people keep coming back.

Kyphoplasty: An Effective Treatment for Compression Fractures

Disabling back pain, difficulty breathing, decreased lung capacity, leg weakness, paralysis and deformity. These are all symptoms of kyphosis – a debilitating disease that affects thousands of Americans each year. This condition is characterized by a forward rounding of the back that leads to a hunchback or slouching position. It can occur at any age and can prevent the individual from being able to complete simple daily tasks.

Fortunately, Dr. Tajul Chowdhury and the team at Center for Pain Management in Edinburg, Texas offer Rio Grande Valley residents a minimally invasive treatment for this painful condition. Kyphoplasty surgery is a procedure that stabilizes the bone in vertebral compression fractures and restores some of the lost vertebral body height. “The conditions that can be treated with this procedure are compression fractures of the vertebral body due to trauma, osteoporosis and metastatic cancer, mostly T5 through L5,” explained Dr. Chowdhury. Kyphoplasty involves making a small incision in the back by inserting a narrow tube and guiding it to the fractured area of the vertebrae. Advanced imaging is then used to insert a special balloon through that vertebra. This balloon is inflated to return the fractured pieces of the spine to a normal position and to Screen Shot 2015-04-27 at 10.36.46 AMcreate a cavity that “decompresses” that lost vertebral height. A cement-like material is injected inside that cavity to keep the bone in the restored position. Kyphoplasty involves complicated techniques and should only be conducted by highly trained physicians. Patients undergoing kyphoplasty should immediately experience pain relief and will soon realize that they need less pain medication. This procedure also lowers the risk for deep vein thrombosis. “Pain relief will be immediate in some patients, while in others elimination or decreased pain will take a few days,” said Chowdhury. “Patients will be able to return to their normal daily activities, but should avoid heavy lifting for at least six weeks.” Center for Pain Management has been the leading pain management clinic in the Rio Grande Valley for over 20 years. Its founder and leading physician, Dr. Tajul Chowdhury, has over 30 years of combined experience in anesthesia and comprehensive and interventional pain. After graduating with an M.B.B.S. from Rajshahi Medical College in Bangladesh, he completed additional training at Boston University and Harvard Medical School. He established Center for Pain Management to help patients manage pain resulting from herniated disks, cancer, work injuries, diabetic neuropathies, arthritis and failed surgeries. Dr. Chowdhury offers some of the most innovative treatments in the field to help his patients continue on with their daily lives. “The way I define success is helping my patients live a better quality of life,” explained Chowdhury. Kyphoplasty helps patients with limited options get back to their regular lives. The ideal candidates for this surgery have symptoms such as low back pain, a decline in bone density and muscle strength, difficulty breathing, pressure sores and side effects from extended narcotic use. Patients can expect almost a 100 percent success rate from this minimally invasive procedure that carries very little risk. The team at Center for Pain Management finds it very rewarding to see young patients being able to play sports again or elderly individuals being able to spend time with their family as a result of this procedure. Kyphoplasty surgery is just another example of how the team lives up to their mission of helping Rio Grande Valley residents live a better quality of life by managing their pain.
